The Route des Grandes Alpes is a tourist itinerary through the French Alps between Thonon-les-Bains on Lake Geneva and Menton on the French Riviera. I cycled along this route in June 2016.
Stage 20 of the 2016 Tour de France passes through Taninges on the penultimate day of the tour.
This Category 1 climb was first included in the Tour de France in 1960 and has since featured 20 times.
In 1911, on its first incursion in the Alps, riders in the Tour de France tackled their first alpine pass, Les Aravis.
Col de l'Iseran (el. 2,764 metres) is the highest paved pass in the Alps. It is situated in the department of Savoie, near the border with Italy.
Served before dessert and consumed in order from mild to sharp.
Col de la Cayolle (el. 2,326 m) sits at the border between the departments of Alpes-Maritimes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
Intense suffering on the second climb of the day caused me to abandon into a VW camper van.
15k to the Mediterranean - all downhill.
Menton is located on the French Riviera at the Franco-Italian border.
